Eleven Websites for Training in DS

  1. http://www.techsoup.org/learningcenter/training/archives/page10096.cfm – Techsoup.org gives an overview of the process of DS in 10 steps.
  2. http://www.bbc.co.uk/wales/audiovideo/sites/yourvideo/pdf/aguidetodigitalstorytelling-bbc.pdf – is an in-depth and honest training document from the Capture Wales team, which covers a variety of aspects of DS, from setting up a workshop, to delivering one. This 47 page linear document is designed both for storytellers and facilitators and would serve well as a bible for DS users.   3. http://downloads.bbc.co.uk/raw/pdf/tutormanual.pdf  – is another training manual, developed by the BBC Telling Lives team and funded by the North West Learning Skills Council and NIACE. It contains a guide to story circle activities. It also gives detailed advice about editorial issues and legal matters.
  4. http://dsi.kqed.org/index.php/workshops/about/C66 – Professionally produced tutorials in the process of DS, split into sub-sections. This set of tutorials deals with the Apple’s IPhoto and IMovie applications, as well as Movie Maker 2 for Windows.
  5. http://www.storycenter.org/cookbook.pdf – One of the big world bibles of DS production. CDS is the longest running digital storytelling company, with an international reputation for its work in the field. The cookbook was the first of the DS training manuals to be produced.
  6. http://www.aberth.com/blog/ds6-digital-storytelling-conference-review-2011.html – Blog on DS from Gareth Morlais, BBC, paying specific reference to DS6; the DS Festival of Wales, 2011.
  7. http://www.photobus.co.uk/?id=534 – Daniel Meadows own website. Click on the Digital Storytelling tab to reveal examples of stories, a description of DS and a number of useful links and publications.
  8. http://www.microsoft.com/education/teachers/guides/digital_storytelling.aspx – Microsoft’s take on DS, mainly aimed at classroom practice in schools in America. It’s geared towards the use of Powerpoint, Photo Story and Movie Maker applications. It’s packed full of links to other useful sites and will open as an ebook (pdf).
  9. http://www.adobe.com/education/instruction/adsc/pdf/digital_storytelling.pdf  -this uses high language and advanced educational techniques to instruct the process, uses and techniques of DS. It is well worth a read if one wants to look at advanced pedagogical issues, like the ‘Baker’s dozen of DS skills’ and the ‘Six elements of good storytelling’. This pdf is especially useful for teachers who might consider DS as a tool for demonstrating learning.
  10. http://www.kitchcat.com/dstory/checklist – List of equipment needed for workshops. A useful checklist before embarking on your own story.
